Italian Domains - Help and FAQ

REGISTRATION
What is a domain name ?

Every website is allocated a string of numbers called an IP address. Try typing 204.142.198.204 in your browser and you will see that you arrive on this site. By associating a domain name to an IP address we make it easier for humans to remember a website or email address.

Why do people register .it domain names ?

.it Italian domain names are intended to geographically represent Italy and as such many italian companies have registered their own name but the "punability" of the .it extension has great appeal to the english speaking world with the possibility to register names such as drink.it, run.it, reserve.it etc.

How does registering an Italian domain name differ from registering a .com domain.

It is possible to register a .com domain name in seconds using an online form. Italy however is a bureaucratic country and requires a hand signed application letter for every domain registered. Despite this the Italian registration Authority usually manages to process registration requests withing one working day from receipt of a faxedcopyof the application letter. The registration procedure on our website will automatically produce the official application letter in Italian for you and an English translation for your reference.

Who can register an Italian domain name ?

Any individual over 18 years of age, association, or company legally resident in any EEC country can register an Italian domain name. Individuals can register only one domain name each. Companies can register asmany domains as they wish.

Will I be the owner of the domain name that I register ?

Domain names are not property and as such cannot be owned. The Italian Registration Authority give you the license to use a domain name, with certain limitations, which is generally considered de facto ownership of the domain name.

What limitations/obligations does the Italian Registration Authority impose?

The obligations are clearly explained in the application letter, an English translation of which can be produced during the registration procedure. They include not using the domain name for illegal purpose, not ceding your rights to use the domain name to third parties, etc. etc.

Can italian domain be sold ?

The regulations state that domains are not property and cannot be sold. However the rules allow you to conditionally give up your rights to a domain name on condition that another party is able to register the same domain name. It's up to you determine whether a private financial transaction takes place simultaneously. Basically you can't sell Italian domain name but you can (and lots of people do). This is Italy !
